About the new facility
- Boral has invested significantly to build a new clinker grinding and cement storage facility at Geelong.
- The clinker grinding and cement storage facility will provide direct and indirect job opportunities for the greater Geelong area, in an economic boost to a growing area. The construction of the new cement facility reaffirms Boral’s ongoing investment in the Geelong community.
- Boral also recognises the importance of the facility location near Lascelles Wharf. The facility is connected by a covered conveyor system to the wharf, providing discharge and processing efficiencies, and takes a number of truck movements off Geelong roads.
Staged approach to build and commission the facility
- Boral Australia is nearing construction completion of a new cement storage and clinker grinding facility at a site adjacent to the Port of Geelong.
- Construction of the new Boral site at Lascelles Wharf commenced in 2018 and is anticipated to be fully completed in 2022.
- Construction on the first phase of the grinding component of the new facility was completed mid-2021.
- The second stage of the project, the remaining grinding capacity and the slag drying and handling component, is expected to be completed in 2022.
- Once the plant is fully operational, clinker and slag will be unloaded from ships and delivered to the site via covered belt conveyors situated on Lascelles Wharf. Following processing, the final cement product will be transported to the Victorian market via enclosed tanker trucks.
Managing the impact of our work
- Boral has worked carefully on detailed plans to manage and mitigate the impacts of ambient dust, noise outputs and traffic impacts, which have been submitted to City of Greater Geelong as part of a Planning Application.
- We will also work closely with other Port of Geelong precinct teams to inform planning of our activities on site, where possible.
