Celebrating history, community and connection at Montrose Family Day

The Montrose Family Open Day was a fantastic opportunity to bring employees, their families, and our local community together for a day of fun, learning, and connection. More than just an event, the day highlighted the long-standing history of our Montrose Quarry while giving our community an inside look at our operations and the important role we play in the region. Local resident Tim Rolfe, who attended with his son Reggi, shared his experience, “It was great, and Reggi had an awesome time! He still talks about it.”

Postcard from Seaham

Meet some of our Seaham team! The site has many long-serving employees who shape its culture. Brendan Kiley and his team of 30 extract 1.2 million tonnes annually, with 70–140,000 tonnes blasted monthly. Terry Johnson has been with Boral for 16 years, while Ray Frankel, a site leading hand, has nearly 14 years of service—his father Jeff works at Macksville Quarry. Amanda Looyenga, at Seaham for 14 years, started in the lab before moving to the weighbridge. She oversees an average of 270 trucks daily, increasing to 325 in peak times. Her father, Barry Martin, was with Boral for 27 years. Damien Plank, who joined from Peats Ridge, has 9.5 years of service, and his son Lucas just completed his first year.

Upgrading Our Fleet of Heavy Mobile Equipment

One of our most significant asset investment programs kicked off in December last year with the delivery of six brand-new Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) assets. With another six assets arriving in the first two months of the year across Queensland, Victoria, and NSW, the rollout is only accelerating. Over 140 new HME assets are set to be delivered throughout 2025, with 12 more arriving in March and April.

Building Our Diverse Team

We believe that having a diverse team at Boral brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, helping us achieve our Good to Great strategy. We're committed to inspiring more people to consider a career with us.

Recently, our Concrete and Quarries South team launched a recruitment campaign to attract talented women to work as plant operators in our Victorian Concrete plants. We've also launched our 'Women Leading' program, a six-month initiative designed to develop leadership skills, foster connections, and support personal and professional growth.

Rocking their way to a clearer future

The quality of stormwater leaving our quarries is important to us and our community. In 2017, a review of water quality at Stonyfell was completed. Boral identified several improvements that could be implemented and committed to complete the improvements in a staged approach.

Since 2017, our Environment and Stonyfell Quarry teams have been working on the staged implementation of these initiatives including ...

40 years in Boral Quarries - with Neil Bellamy

“The art of crushing rock is still pretty much the same, technology has significantly improved though, as have our systems for health, safety and environment.”

Neil Bellamy is not one for a fuss – but given that he’s just clocked up 40 years at Boral we thought you’d like to hear his story.

Seal of approval - Narooma team’s sky-high effort

Montague Island Burunguba is a small island located nine kilometres off the south coast of NSW near Narooma. Popular with tourists for the array of wildlife including the largest colony of little penguins in NSW, thousands of birds and a colony of fur seals.

When the NSW Parks and Wildlife team needed to update the 400-metre-long access track on the island, they called in the team from our Narooma plant.

The Narooma team was asked to supply 90 cubic metres of concrete in three cubic metre loads across four days. The only way of supplying a project like this is with a helicopter and kibble.

Quieting the Quarry – Wollert’s sound solutions

As part of our requirements under GED, we recently reviewed noise controls at Wollert Quarry to identify any plant and equipment that might emit unreasonable noise – either in volume, intensity, duration or character.

Taking positive and proactive steps to meet the regulator’s noise protocols and limits makes us a good neighbour, and is also vital to the prospect of obtaining an approval to expand Wollert quarry, which has the potential to release an additional six million tonnes.

Montrose and Coldstream teams lend a hand

Lauren Trewin, Montrose and Coldstream Quarry Manager, and her team in Victoria supported Gladesville Primary School with an important project on site.

“The school came to us with a dream of building a Yarning Circle for the children, and after some careful planning it was great to be able to help them bring this project to life for this small school community,” Lauren said.
