Byrock is a remote village in northwestern New South Wales, located around 80 kilometres from Bourke. With a population of just 26 people, along with a steady presence of emus, kangaroos and wild goats, it’s a place defined by resilience, history and connection to the land.
The town takes its name from the Nyammba word ‘Bai’, meaning rock hole. These natural rock holes once played a vital role in sustaining early travel routes, providing water for Cobb & Co coaches passing through the region. By the late 1800s, the Mulga Creek Hotel was established as a change station on this route, supporting travellers moving across western New South Wales.
Today, Byrock continues to play an important role in supporting regional infrastructure, thanks to Boral’s ongoing operations at Byrock Quarry.
Supplying essential materials to regional NSW
Boral has operated Byrock Quarry since 1986, following its acquisition from Far Western Stone Quarries Pty Ltd, which began operating the site in 1964.
The quarry extracts basalt, a durable Cenozoic volcanic rock formed approximately 60 million years ago. Known for its strength and reliability, this material supports a wide range of construction applications across the region.
Each day, approximately 100 tonnes of product leave the site, supplying:
- local road sealing projects
- concrete production
- essential infrastructure works
These materials are delivered to markets across Bourke, Brewarrina and Cobar shires, helping maintain and develop critical regional roads and construction projects.
Operating in a uniquely remote environment
Operating a quarry in such a remote location presents unique challenges. The site is entirely off-grid, with the office powered by a generator and limited access to external infrastructure.
Material extraction follows established quarrying methods, including drilling, controlled blasting and excavation, before being transported to the processing plant. Blasting is conducted annually, providing a reliable supply of material for processing throughout the year.
Despite the remote conditions, the quarry maintains a steady supply chain, dispatching between two and eight truckloads per day to surrounding communities.
A small team making a big impact
The Byrock Quarry team is small but highly experienced, managing operations in one of the most isolated parts of New South Wales.
Their work ensures a consistent supply of high-quality materials that regional communities rely on every day. Local councils depend on this supply to maintain road networks and support ongoing infrastructure development.
The site’s importance extends beyond operations. It plays a key role in enabling connectivity across remote regions where reliable materials and logistics are critical.
Supporting regional communities for decades
For over 40 years, Byrock Quarry has been part of the fabric of regional New South Wales, quietly supporting the roads, infrastructure and communities that keep the region moving.
In a landscape defined by distance and harsh conditions, consistency matters. Byrock Quarry continues to deliver just that, supplying essential materials where they are needed most.
