Boral’s Purga Quarry is situated near Ipswich in Queensland which is about 50 kilometres from Brisbane City with the site covering 120 acres.
Purga is a small semi-rural community of around 500 people with many bush walkers and mountain bike riders visiting its popular Flinders-Goolman nature reserve which has the largest protected remnant of Swamp Tea Tree in Australia and has stunning across the Scenic Rim and of the Great Dividing Range.
Boral has operated the quarry since 1990 with an approved extraction rate of 1 million TPA. but generally supplies the market with about 500,000 TPA. The team of 12 full time staff supply around half their sales within the Ipswich and Scenic Rim Council regions with the rest of their products going into the Brisbane metro market. The Quarry has supplied construction materials for major projects including the Amberley Airbase Runway, subdivision and construction projects at Ripley Valley, Springfield, Redbank Plains and Yamanto.
The Purga Quarry source rock is predominantly basalt. Its distinctive black rock is a high-quality material capable of producing high strength concrete aggregate and drainage materials as well as specified and non-specified road base and is a popular choice for exposed aggregate products due to its colour.
The site is currently working towards a proposed extension of the existing pit which will extend the life of the quarry by a further ten years.
