Skips That Save

In early 2024, Boral’s Recycling and Sydney Concrete teams worked together to introduce a practical and forward-thinking solution to a common industry challenge: what to do with leftover wet concrete. The answer? Branded concrete skip bins, now a familiar sight across our Sydney sites.

These bins are designed to capture wet concrete returns directly at our plants. Instead of sending this material to landfill, it’s transported to Boral’s recycling facilities, where it’s processed into high-quality road bases and aggregates. These recycled materials are then used in new construction projects - closing the loop and reducing waste.

This initiative is a clear example of circular economy principles in action. It’s helping us reduce landfill volumes, lower carbon emissions, and make better use of valuable resources.

But the skip bin program is just one part of a much broader sustainability effort.

It forms a key component of Boral’s Circular Materials Solution program, which processes more than 2 million tonnes of construction, excavation, and demolition (C&D) waste annually. With 14 recycling sites across Australia, Boral is one of the country’s largest recyclers of C&D materials.

Our recycling operations are deeply integrated with our concrete, asphalt, and quarry businesses. This allows us to reintroduce recycled materials into the supply chain efficiently and reliably — supporting our customers’ sustainability goals while maintaining the high standards they expect from Boral.

As we mark one year of the skip bin initiative, the results speak for themselves: less waste, more recycled product, and a stronger commitment to building a more sustainable future.
