Linwood Quarry, located in Seacliff Park in Adelaide’s southern suburbs, has been a cornerstone of South Australia’s construction industry since 1882. Originally established to supply limestone to the Brighton Cement Works, the site has evolved over more than 140 years into one of the state’s largest producers of hard rock aggregates.

From its early days as part of the South Australian Portland Cement Company to its modern role within Boral’s national operations, Linwood has played a vital role in building the infrastructure that supports Adelaide’s growth - from roads and airports to coastline protection and residential development.

A Restored Piece of Quarry History

To celebrate this rich legacy, the team at Linwood Quarry has restored and placed one of the original cable car carts at the site’s weighbridge. These carts were once used to transport material across the quarry and are a symbol of the ingenuity and hard work that shaped the site’s early operations.

The restoration was led by Andrew Geue, Linwood Quarry Manager, who is passionate about preserving the site’s heritage. The cart now stands as a visual reminder of the quarry’s journey from hand-operated machinery to today’s high-tech fleet of loaders, haul trucks and drill rigs.

A Site That Keeps Evolving

While Linwood honours its past, it’s also focused on the future. The quarry is part of Boral’s Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) asset upgrade program, which ensures our sites operate safely, efficiently and sustainably. With over 150 years of quarry life remaining, Linwood continues to supply high-quality materials for major projects across South Australia.

Community Connection

Linwood Quarry is surrounded by residential areas, conservation zones and local infrastructure. Boral is committed to operating responsibly and engaging with the community through open days, environmental monitoring and regular updates. The restored cable car cart is just one way we’re connecting past and present, and sharing the story of the quarry with our neighbours.
