Sunshine Coast Airport, located in Marcoola, Queensland, is a vital hub for both domestic and international travel. The airport, which opened in 1961, serves as a gateway to the Sunshine Coast region, known for its beautiful beaches and tourist attractions. It handles over 1 million passengers annually and accommodates a variety of aircraft, including commercial, charter, and private planes.
Project Challenge
After recent paving of the light aircraft taxiway, joint sealing was required to prevent water ingress and ensure the longevity of the asphalt. Water damage poses a risk to the strength and durability of asphalt, with its infiltration potentially causing potholes, erosion and structural weaknesses.
This was part of a larger upgrade to the taxiway, which had been completed six months prior. The challenge was to ensure the durability and performance of the taxiway while maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency.
Boral Solution
Boral has a proven track record in delivering successful airport surfacing and resurfacing projects throughout Australia, offering high-performance products tailored for the airports industry.
Boral's Surface Coat product was approved by the contract administrator due to its ability to rejuvenate, highlight, and protect asphalt and concrete pavements. It extends the life of pavements by protecting them from UV damage and water ingress, and can improve slip resistance on concrete surfaces.
The team from Allens Asphalt, a subsidiary of Boral, used 80 litres of Surface Coat to achieve the desired result. The application process involved using masking tape to establish a straight line on either side of the construction joints. Two coats of Surface Coat were then applied using a paint roller, covering an area of approximately 250mm x 200lm.
Project Outcomes
Now complete, Sunshine Coast Airport is ready to welcome the return of light aircraft to its improved taxiway, safely protected from the challenges of water damage.
"The product worked well and the job came up a treat. The customer was pleased with the outcome," said David Daniel, Area Manager of Allens Asphalt SEQ.
Conclusion
This project at Sunshine Coast Airport is a great example of how Boral's Surface Coat can be effectively used in infrastructure projects to enhance durability and performance. Our involvement in the light aircraft taxiway upgrade is another example of our capability and expertise in managing airport infrastructure, demonstrating that Boral is the ideal partner for airport owners and operators seeking the best possible outcome.
