With geology on the curriculum, why wouldn’t you have the nearby quarry manager come and talk rocks with Year 3?

Andrew Geue made quite the impression on the Seacliff Primary class, especially when he mentioned that he gets to blow up rocks once a week. The students were interested in how the quarry operated, what type of rock we have at Linwood Quarry in Marino, South Australia, how they are processed and transported, and what things are made with the final products – bridges, skate parks, and roads being the more popular examples.

The Boral Linwood Quarry, positioned within one of Adelaide and South Australia's most important sources of hard rock, has been providing aggregates for almost 130 years. The quarry is located between Marino and Hallett Cove, not far from the shore of the Gulf of St Vincent, in Adelaide's southern suburbs. It employs 30 full-time staff and provides work for up to 80 contractors and transport workers. The site also hosts Boral Marino Concrete, part of Boral's network of concrete plants servicing the city.

After a big discussion with the students on rocks and how we make asphalt and cement, it was time to take a close look at the concrete agitator truck parked outside. Rob McNeil, SA Concrete and Quarries Logistics Supervisor, and driver Narenda Singh explained how the agis are loaded to make concrete, all the truck's safety features, and a quick blast of the air horn which brought a few other students out to investigate the vehicle.

Boral has been involved in several significant projects in South Australia, contributing to the construction of essential infrastructure. The Linwood Quarry has been a critical and strategic resource, supporting building and construction across the Adelaide metropolitan area. The quarry has also been recognised as a model of best practice for the extractive industry in South Australia, having achieved several awards for its operations.

We look forward to returning to Seacliff Primary next year and have hopefully inspired the next generation of Boral staff.
