Edgar Dam in southwestern Tasmania is one of three dams built around Lake Pedder, adjacent to the Lake Edgar Fault Line. It’s part of an extensive hydro infrastructure in the State’s south west and sits within Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

When the damn was built in the 1970s the fault line was thought to be inactive. Experts have since determined the fault line cannot be considered inactive, and the dam wall and foundations need to be strengthened.

Enter the team from across Boral Tasmania including Sales, Quarry and technical colleagues, who are working with the contractor on upgrade works which kicked off in early 2025. As you might guess, the team are making sure the materials used, and the processes employed to construct the gravel filters and rock fill are within the strict environmental controls and technical specifications.

This project will improve seismic resistance of the dam, in the unlikely event of a major earthquake, in line with national guidelines.
