With 39,800 cubic metres of concrete, 5000 tonnes of steel and over 1.1 million work hours, One The Esplanade is one of Perth’s most advanced and sustainable commercial buildings.
This unique project is often referred to as being completed on time, on budget, and ‘on carbon’, with Multiplex achieving their highest ever carbon saving for the concrete used in the building’s construction.
How is a project completed ‘on carbon’?
We collaborated with Multiplex and their partners to make early design phase and delivery decisions that allowed us to make a significant impact on carbon.
When planning began for the building, Multiplex brought teams from Boral, SRG Global and BG&E together to determine how they could evolve the use of concrete to achieve the building’s unique design features and reduce carbon output, without compromising quality and performance.
Together we developed a unique concrete mix and construction methodology that allowed our lower embodied carbon concrete products to be used for every element of the build – including the high-performance concrete and post-tension slabs.
This achieved a 46 per cent reduction in Portland (general purpose) cement, creating a carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) saving of 7,560 tonnes, the equivalent of planting 125,000 new trees.
The project is an example of how collaboration and innovation across the industry can have a significant impact on our industry’s carbon footprint.
The project is also a finalist for several 2024 Urban Developer Awards to be announced in July including for Commercial Development of the Year, Excellence in Sustainability, and Excellence in Construction Innovation.
