The Level Crossing Removal Project is a significant initiative aimed at improving safety, reducing congestion, and enhancing liveability across metropolitan Melbourne.

Since 2017, the Victorian Government has been working to remove dangerous and congested level railway crossings, deliver new train stations and infrastructure, and create more community open spaces.

This $8.3 billion State Government-funded program will remove 195 level crossings by 2030. To date, 85 level crossings have been removed with an additional 110 to be completed. The program includes transforming 6 train lines to be level crossing-free - Cranbourne, Pakenham, Lilydale, Sunbury, Werribee and Frankston.

Removing level crossings and providing alternatives not only reduces road congestion but also delivers significant safety improvements, increases capacity to run more trains on the network, and provides new precincts and open space for local communities to enjoy well into the future.

As part of this project, Boral has supplied concrete and quarry materials to many of the level crossing projects, including removals at Ormond, McKinnon and Bentleigh.

Our ongoing capacity and capability across our integrated network of construction materials, bolstered by our in-house and contract logistics operations, has made us a trusted project partner to effectively manage the supply chain with a strong focus on safety and environmental compliance.

Boral's Concrete and Quarries South team has been recently working on the Hopkins Road level crossing, set to be replaced with a new road bridge, keeping cars, cyclists, and pedestrians safely above the tracks.

Crews have been digging deep in Truganina with piling and concrete works for the new bridge’s foundations now completed. Over the past two months, two giant piling rigs weighing up to 95 tonnes dug 48 holes. These holes were filled with 280,000 cubic metres of concrete to form the base of the road bridge that will take vehicles safely over the rail line.

Crews also moved 72,000 tonnes of earth to construct the road bridge embankments, with a total of 250,000 tonnes of soil required.

Boral are proud to be part of this significant project, led by Victoria's Big Build, which ensures safer travel and reduced congestion for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users and all Victorians.

Did You Know?

With one of the longest rail networks in the world, Australia has thousands of level crossings in both metro and rural/regional areas. A level crossing is a place where a road or pedestrian path crosses railway tracks at the same level, rather than going over or under the railway via a bridge or underpass.
