How is coloured concrete made or installed?
Coloured concrete is made by adding pigments or oxides such as those in Boral’s Colori® range directly into the concrete mix. This process ensures the colour permeates the entire slab, resulting in a long-lasting, uniform finish that won’t peel or fade over time.
The installation process follows standard concreting practices with a few key considerations:
- Mixing: Pigments are blended with cement, aggregates, and water during batching. The amount and type of pigment determine the final colour intensity.
- Pouring: The coloured concrete is poured and levelled like traditional concrete. Care is taken to maintain consistency in colour and texture across the surface.
- Finishing: Various finishing techniques can be applied, including brooming, trowelling, stamping, or exposing aggregate. These finishes enhance slip resistance and visual appeal.
- Curing & Sealing: Proper curing is essential to prevent cracking and ensure colour retention. Sealing the surface helps protect against stains, weathering, and UV exposure.
Coloured concrete installation should be carried out by experienced concreters to ensure even colour distribution and a high-quality finish. Boral offers mix recommendations tailored to your project’s location, design goals, and durability needs.
