Agitator Driver
Describe your job and qualifications?
My job is to slump loads and safely/efficiently deliver concrete to job sites. I have a HR truck licence.
What does a typical day look like?
I start work in the morning, complete my pre-start/put myself in service and then deliver as many loads as I am required to take throughout the day (anywhere usually from 3-6)- this includes getting loaded, slumping, driving to sites, discharging and returning to the plant. I wash my truck at the end of the day and get ready to do it all again the next!
What is your favourite part of the job?
My favourite part of the job is being able to get out and about and drive around and interact with the customers/my fellow co-workers. Everyone looks out for one another and I get treated with respect which is a huge bonus! I love being able to make sure I am providing customers with a good service and I strive to make sure I deliver concrete efficiently and with a smile (mostly because I really enjoy my job- so that’s not hard) and the concrete is up to standard. Knowing the customers are happy and we are working as a team within the plant makes everything run smoothly and is very enjoyable!
What do you like the most about working at Boral?
From the minute I started at Boral, I was treated with great respect from all. We all work great as a team and work hard to get each of our jobs done. I have felt great support whilst being at Boral, especially transitioning from a corporate job in Finance to truck driving and concrete, it was a massive adjustment! The hours can be long and the days can be tiring when adjusting to it, but having a great team of hard workers and great energy really helps you through those sometimes busy, long, hot, tiring days and everyone was really understanding of the adjustment. It was made smooth with the great support of those around me at work, everyone helps everyone and I have always felt comfortable to ask questions if I was ever unsure about anything. Safety and accountability is a huge component and knowing that Boral prides themselves in upholding safe work practices makes it just that little bit easier. I have always felt well equipped and trained in all aspects whether it be safe work practices or general work procedures whilst being at Boral and I hope that I can continue to deliver concrete to a high standard and grow within the company. Being at Boral means the opportunities for growth is endless which is definitely one of my favourite things about the company! Stepping out from corporate and into this role was so worth it and everyday I am very grateful for Boral in giving me this opportunity!
Do you have any advice for people wanting to work in your profession?
The only advice I can give to people considering working as a truck driver is to obtain your truck licence and give it a go! You’ll never know if you don’t try. Believe in yourself and welcome the change with a good, open-minded, can-do attitude. Life is about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and you never know where it could take you!
Who is your female role model?
As an avid equestrian outside of work, my female role model is Show Jumper, Edwina Tops-Alexander. From Sydney, she worked her way up and is now one of the highest ranked female riders in the world. Riding in itself at a high level takes courage, and taking on the global stage in it and doing it well is a whole different level. She believes in a “strong mindset” and is a strong showcase that when you have a passion for something and you set your mind to do it, you can really achieve anything in this life- through hard work and dedication, of course!
What’s one piece of advice would you give your 16 year old self?
If there was one piece of advice I’d give to my younger 16 year old self, it would be that life doesn’t always turn out the way you want it, but that can be a blessing in itself. I’d tell myself to embrace change, step out of my comfort zones a bit more, take everything as a learning opportunity and to follow whatever it is that makes me happy/I am passionate about- no matter what anyone else says! Life has a weird way of surprising you sometimes, but that’s the best part about it! :)
