Mount Regal Quarry’s record-breaking supply to vital road project

Boral’s Mount Regal Quarry has ramped up production to historic highs to support a critical road infrastructure upgrade in Western Australia’s Pilbara. 

Over seven months Boral is providing the vital quarry materials for the 48.5-kilometre, two-lane road sealing project of Karratha-Tom Price Road, which will become a main haulage and freight artery in the region.

Once finished, the road upgrade is expected to bring several benefits to users including improved safety, reduced travel times, fewer road closures during wet weather and better access to Millstream Chichester National Park and Karijini National Park.

The project is a record supply contract for the Boral’s north-west region. Our quarry in Karratha is sending 25 triple road trains filled with roadbase and sub base to the project six days a week, a round trip of 250 kilometres. 

The project, the third stage of the four-stage Karratha-Tom Price Corridor Upgrade, will also provide improved links between Karratha, Roebourne, Tom Price and Paraburdoo. 

Boral is proud to have been successfully chosen for the contract based on our service and the quality of our materials at Mount Regal Quarry, which produces a very good quality basalt rock. 

During this project, we have also maintained a high level of service and supply to our underlying customers. 

Stage one of the Karratha-Tom Price Road Corridor Upgrade project started in 2003. Completion of stage three works is expected by October 2020 and the 107-kilometre stage four section is expected to be completed in 2023.

The project is jointly funded by the Western Australian and Federal governments.
