Mount Kuring-gai Concrete Plant Opens
Boral has put the finishing touches on its new purpose-built mobile concrete batch plant in Mount Kuring-gai in readiness for the construction of the NorthConnex motorway in Sydney.
NorthConnex is two nine-kilometre dual-lane tunnels designed to ease Sydney’s traffic on one of the most congested roads in Australia and form a crucial link in Sydney’s road network.
Boral will supply a total of 530,000 cubic metres of concrete via Mount Kuring-gai and a fixed plant in Blacktown for the $3 billion project by Lendlease Bouygues.
The critical locations of the Blacktown and Mount Kuring-gai plants will also substantially minimise truck traffic movements across Sydney to the site – in line with the project’s safety and sustainability goals.
Mount Kuring-gai will provide concrete 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to the project until 2018.
The tunnels will form the crucial links between the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills to enable travel from Melbourne to Newcastle – a journey of more than 1000 kilometres (640 miles) – without a single set of traffic lights.
NorthConnex will be able to carry more than 100,000 vehicles daily and save motorists up to 15 minutes in travel time instead of using the congested Pennant Hills Road. The tunnels are expected to open in 2019.
