Boral has helped Western Australia’s Orange Grove Primary School reinvigorate its grounds and support students in their goal of providing a haven for the endangered Carnaby’s black cockatoo.
Boral provided blue metal dust for two car parks and new paths in the peace garden and front entrances at the school in Perth’s south-eastern suburbs, near the company’s Orange Grove quarry. Quarry employees provided equipment and labour to complete the works.
Boral, in partnership with Conservation Volunteers Australia, helped students build five nesting boxes for the Carnaby’s black cockatoo around the school’s peace garden and bushland areas of the grounds. As a result the students have also been able to monitor the birds’ activity during the 2016 school year.
“We really appreciate what Boral has done – the paths in our peace garden and carpark, donation of gravel and financing the nesting boxes for the black cockatoos,” says Orange Grove Primary School Principal Cassandra Cole. “The school became involved in building nesting boxes for the black cockatoos because they are an endangered species and we wanted to help increase the local population. All these improvements at our school are enjoyed by our 130 students, staff and the parents within the school.”
The Connected Communities Program managed by Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) with Boral’s support assists schools and communities to educate and inspire young Australians to take action for the future of their environment. Boral has been a supporter of Conservation Volunteers Australia for more than 25 years and has supported this program since 2012.
“Boral is delighted to be able to contribute to Australian schools and communities by sponsoring this very worthwhile initiative. CVA is Boral’s longest standing community partner and during our many years working together we have been able to make a sustainable and valued contribution to many of the communities in which we operate,” says Michael Wilson, Boral’s Group Health, Safety and Environment Director.
