Located within the Morang Hills, Boral’s Wollert Quarry includes quarrying and processing operations alongside a concrete plant, across approximately 178 hectares of Boral land holdings. Its proximity to Melbourne’s CBD has helped support major building and infrastructure needs over time.
Boral’s Wollert Quarry has operated since 1971 as a hard rock quarry. It lies within the Morang Hills, a geological formation described as a Palaeozoic Inlier surrounded by basalt flows. The quarry extracts metamorphosed hornfels, a hard, fine-grained rock suited to construction applications.
Together with its processing operations and on-site concrete plant, it forms a key part of Boral’s supply network supporting construction across Melbourne.
The site occupies approximately 178 hectares and produces aggregates that are used in the manufacture of concrete and asphalt, as well as other building and construction applications.
West of the quarry pit, Boral operates both a quarry processing plant and a concrete batching plant, enabling efficient supply of materials to major infrastructure, commercial and residential projects.
Operations at Wollert employ 14 full time staff and support work for up to 40 transport drivers, contributing to local employment and supply chains.
Positive relationships with the community are an important part of how Boral operates at Wollert Quarry.

Community Reference Group (CRG)
The Wollert Quarry Community Reference Group provides a forum for open communication between Boral and the local community.
The CRG meets regularly to review environmental performance, discuss operational updates and provide an opportunity for community members to raise questions or concerns.

The Wollert Quarry operates under Work Authority 102 and meets its regulatory obligations for environmental management.
Quarry operations can generate dust, noise and vehicle movements. These are actively monitored and managed to ensure compliance with approval conditions and to minimise impact on the surrounding community.
A range of measures are in place to reduce environmental impact and support responsible use of natural resources.
Water Conservation
Water used in production is sourced from on-site bores, with mains water reserved for amenities. Through a Water Conservation Plan, water usage has been minimised, with approximately 0.04 litres of water used per tonne of aggregate produced.
Dust Management
Dust suppression measures are implemented across the site, including water carts on internal roads and fixed spray systems at key processing points to reduce airborne dust.
Ongoing Monitoring
Environmental performance is continuously monitored, with controls in place to manage noise, dust and operational impacts within approved limits.

The Wollert Quarry commenced operations in May 1971, with a concrete plant added to the site in 2004.
The quarry operates under Extractive Industry Work Authority 102 (WA102), issued under the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990. This work authority is supported by Planning Permit 704899 from the City of Whittlesea, which provides approval for quarry operations.
The adjacent concrete plant operates under a separate Planning Permit 707573.
Quarry expansion update
Boral is currently progressing approvals to extend the Wollert Quarry’s extraction area within its existing landholdings.
This process is being undertaken in accordance with the relevant regulatory framework, including a Work Plan Variation and planning approvals.
