For more than two decades, Vince Nigro has built a rewarding career at Boral, progressing from the quarry floor to supporting operations across South Australia.
Today, as Operations Quarry Support Manager for South Australia, Vince works alongside quarry teams across the state, helping support site operations and mentoring the next generation of quarry leaders. It's a role that draws on more than 23 years of industry experience and a career shaped by continuous learning and opportunity.
Vince's connection to the industry began long before he joined Boral. His father operated a contracting business supplying bin trucks to Murray Bridge Quarry, while Vince worked as a mechanic maintaining the fleet.
Working around the quarry gave him exposure to both the transport side of the business and the crushing plant operations. When a position became available at Boral, encouragement from the quarry manager at the time inspired him to apply.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Learning Through Experience
Vince's first role at Boral was operating the sales loader at Murray Bridge Quarry. Less than a year later, he was offered an opportunity to step into a supervisory role at Stonyfell Quarry.
"It was a much larger site with more employees, which provided a great learning experience," Vince said.
Over the following years, Vince worked across several sites including Salisbury, Para Hills and Linwood Quarry, where he spent seven years and regularly stepped into the role of Acting Quarry Manager.
His career continued to evolve through a variety of operational and leadership positions, including Quarry Manager and Quarry Support Manager roles, giving him experience across multiple quarry operations throughout South Australia.
Investing in Growth
Throughout his career, Vince has embraced opportunities to learn and develop new skills.
After joining Boral, he completed Certificates II, III and IV in Surface Extraction, a Diploma in Surface Extraction and Quarry Management certification. He also became a qualified Trainer and Assessor, helping develop other quarry professionals within the business.
"Watching people I've trained go on to become successful Quarry Managers has been one of the highlights of my career," he said.
Vince has also completed leadership training and continues to support the development of quarry teams across the state.
Supporting the Next Generation
One of the aspects Vince enjoys most about his current role is the opportunity to work across Boral's South Australian quarry network.
"Because I work with all the sites, I'm familiar with the operations and the teams. We've welcomed several new Quarry Managers in recent years and part of my role is supporting them as required," he said.
For Vince, however, the people remain the biggest reason he has stayed with Boral for more than two decades.
"The people are the best part of Boral. I've made many friends over the years and I work with great people right across the business."
A Safer and Stronger Industry
Having spent more than 20 years in the industry, Vince has witnessed significant changes across quarry operations.
He believes one of the biggest improvements has been the continued focus on safety and planning.
"Boral has the processes and controls in place to help ensure everyone goes home safely. We've also become more strategic in how we plan for the future and manage our quarry operations."
Family, Sport and Looking Ahead
Outside of work, Vince and his family are heavily involved in sport.
His son Nathan represents Australia in men's indoor netball, while his other son Cody and daughter Amy are also passionate netball and football players.
With growing interest in indoor netball and the possibility of future Olympic inclusion, the family has spent recent years travelling extensively in support of Nathan's sporting ambitions.
For Vince, the values of commitment, teamwork and continuous improvement that underpin high-performance sport are not unlike those that have shaped his career.
Reflecting on his journey, he's grateful for the opportunities Boral has provided.
"If you want to work for a good company, Boral is the place to be. I've been given many opportunities throughout my career, and I'm proud of the sites and teams I've had the chance to support."
