Melbourne's extensive South Wharf project has recently been completed, adding a further dimension to the $1.4 billion Convention Centre development. The project has involved the transformation of the wharf area from a derelict space into a beautiful harbourside lookout.

Boral Timber was contracted to supply the hardwood for the extensive fendering along the South Wharf. Green sawn 200 x 75mm Spotted Gum was installed vertically along the edge of the promenade down to the surface of the water to provide a smart and arresting finish. The timber was laid along the full length of the promenade, which is more than 1km long, requiring 240 cubic metres of solid hardwood.

Horizontal battens were bolted to the concrete to provide a structure to which the decking could be screwed.

Spotted Gum was selected for its durability and extremely high density. These attributes make Spotted Gum a popular choice for industrial applications. The timber was treated with an ACQ treatment in order to provide maximum resilience to the elements.

“From an engineering point of view, this was a major project for us with a number of structural and environmental challenges,” said Geoff Thomas, Managing Director, Contexx Engineering. “We’re delighted with the new look and feel of the area and look forward to seeing the final shop fronts installed and the place brought to life with the hustle and bustle of people.”

The South Wharf has been fitted out with a five star office tower, a deluxe hotel, plus numerous cafés, restaurants, bars, shops and cinemas. The area is currently bustling with tenants fitting out for the grand opening of Wed 14 Oct.
