Boral Timber was recently
contracted to supply the timber
flooring for a $34million renovation
of the Queensland Performing
Arts Centre. This was the Centre’s
first major renovation since it
opened in 1985.
Both the 1800-seat Concert Hall and 2000-seat Lyric Theatre had new floors installed which were specified in Blackbutt species. This species was chosen for its hardness and durability,
as well as its light honey, cream and brown hues giving the Concert Hall a light, spacious aesthetic.
"The quality and colour of the
timber significantly contribute to
the revitalisation of the venue,” said Richard Coulson, Director, Cox Rayner Architects. “The acoustics have also been considerably improved, enhancing the overall experience for visitors."
A 45mm board width was selected,
enabling it to be bent to fit the 27
metre radius of the theatre. Using
Selleys Liquid Nails Direct Stick
the floor boards were glued down
to minimise movement once laid.
Ironbark nosing was then installed
on each of the steps of the aisle to
provide a hardy, visible tread.
The floor was finished with one coat of Toby Aquamax Rollerseal and two coats of Toby Aquamax Commercial Satin, a two pack water-based polyurethane, which is tough, nonyellowing and easy to re-coat.
"We're delighted with the finished
look and have had a great response from our regular visitors who are really impressed with the transformation," said Bill Jessop, Executive Manager of Production Services, Queensland Performing Arts Centre. |
