Located in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs, the Oriental hotel received an extensive renovation, transforming it from a tired pub to a popular, contemporary venue.
Installation of a new floor and outdoor decking area was a major component of the renovation.
Sydney Blue Gum flooring was specified for the interior for its warmth and contemporary feel. It also tied in well with the restaurant’s Chi theme.
The 80 x 19mm tongue and groove boards were laid over timber battens and coated with four coats of Bona Traffic Satin.
A dramatic stone wall was a feature of the hotel entrance and this complicated the task of laying the boards. The line of the stonework had to be followed, so the boards were individually cut with a jigsaw and laid 10mm off the wall.
To create an outdoor feature Swan River Reds decking from the Boral Timber’s outdoor decking range was specified due to its unique character of the deep red colouring.
The boards were laid onto timber battens fixed to concrete. The concrete had to slope away to allow for drainage, so the battens were packed to accommodate the differences in height along the slope. Two coats of Feast Watson Nature Coat were then applied to the deck to enhance the colour of the native hardwood species.
During the course of the renovation, the reopening of the hotel was moved forward by two weeks. A team of eight people worked day and night to complete the floor, which covered a total area of 900 square metres.
