When Interior Designer Rebecca Yeo was briefed to handle the refurbishment of a stylish Sydney CBD office, a timber floor was a must.
The foyer for CMC Markets, an online share trading company on the 44th floor of Governor Phillip Tower, has spectacular views east across Sydney Harbour and has a floor area of 200m².
Boral 13mm overlay solid strip flooring in Spotted Gum was specified for the project for a number of reasons. “We wanted a timber floor no matter what,” says Mark Hindle of CMC Markets. “The foyer is designed to have a traditional financial services look with some very modern touches.”
Those touches can be found in the floor to ceiling expanses of glass, the curved walls, feature plants, timber sculpture and one spectacular Aboriginal painting.
“Boral 13mm overlay solid strip flooring was specified because each board is only 13mm in height,” says Rebecca Yeo of Rice Daubney in Sydney. “The reduced thickness of the Boral 13mm overlay solid strip flooring compared with that of conventional timber flooring assisted in dealing with lift threshold heights in the building.”
Rice Daubney is well known for the refurbishment of Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building many years ago after winning a worldwide call for proposals to create a major retail emporium. Some of their more recent projects include the Optus headquarters and Henry Deane Park.
The Boral 13mm overlay solid strip flooring hardwood floor was supplied by SE Timber Flooring with the installation taking place overnight in order to limit interruption to business operations.
“Solid 19mm flooring needs about two weeks for acclimatisation before you can complete the sand and finishing,” says Zak Refai from SE Timber Flooring. “Boral 13mm overlay solid strip flooring can be installed and allowed to acclimatise in situ so this is what we recommended to the interior designers.”
“Such a quick installation time suits the tight schedules often required in commercial fit outs,” said Rebecca. Spotted Gum was specified for its high janka or hardness rating (11) as the foyer will receive a good deal of traffic. It was also chosen for the tonal variations that make Spotted Gum a sought-after species. The colours found in Spotted Gum vary from pale grey-browns and soft creams to a rich chocolate brown. The texture is moderately coarse with variable grain patterns and a fiddle-back effect and prominent growth rings.
“There are a number of other timber species including American Cherry and Figure White Sycamore in the foyer at CMC Markets,” says Rebecca. “The natural colour variation in the Spotted Gum anchors the two contrasting timbers well.”.
