Barangaroo South is Australia's first large scale carbon neutral community, setting new benchmarks in sustainability.

Barangaroo South is a 7.5-hectare financial hub featuring commercial, residential, retail, dining and accommodation elements on Sydney Harbour and house 1,800 residents and 23,000 office workers. It is part of the 22-hectare Barangaroo redevelopment of a former container terminal.

Project Challenge

The client set an ambitious sustainability goal for Crown Sydney - a 20% reduction in embodied carbon across the entire site versus standard methods of construction.

Additionally, the congested Sydney Harbour site layout and requirements for continuous high-volume pours necessitated tailored concrete mix designs to optimise results under challenging pumping conditions.

Boral's Solution

To overcome logistical challenges, Boral built a bespoke onsite concrete batch plant to substantially reduce traffic movements – in line with the project’s safety and sustainability goals. Due to the scale of the project, up to 2,000m3 of concrete was required during peak times to service the construction site. This would represent approximately 300 agitator truck movements per day causing significant transport emissions and associated traffic impacts.

Boral's purpose-built batch plant was designed for a demanding pumping environment and eliminated the need for testing cylinders for early age strength through use of temperature tagging.

Our team developed a centralised pumping system using 4 separate lines to span the entire site and substantially reduce the need for agitator trucks. The batch plant sent concrete up to 300 lineal metres before pumping up the tower.

Unique long line concrete mix options were created to solve the challenges of pumping long distances plus high towers. De Martin and Gasparini, a subsidiary of Boral, supplied, pumped and placed the concrete during the build.

Project Outcomes

In total, Boral supplied 383,000 cubic metres of concrete across Barangaroo South. Boral’s low carbon concrete, ENVISIA®, was used to meet the stringent engineering requirements of the project and enable Crown to achieve a Green Building Council of Australia's 6 Green Star rating. Supplementary Green Star 3 customised concrete mixes were supplied to support world-leading sustainable targets.

The Barangaroo South precinct was selected as the Property Council of Australia’s NSW Development of the Year in 2018.

In an Australian first for Boral, Barangaroo South marked the first commercial and residential construction where agitators were not needed for the majority of pours.

Boral are proud to have been part of this landmark project which has redefined Sydney's skyline.
