This residential renovation in Perth replaced the original 1990s red brick pool surround with Atlantis Beach exposed aggregate, one of Boral’s most popular decorative concrete finishes. The works also included new steps beneath the alfresco area, a raised seating landing overlooking the pool, and transitions to garden beds and retaining walls.
Project challenge
The existing red brick surround had become uncomfortable and unsafe for the homeowners’ young family. The project required a replacement surface that could address these issues across a technically complex backyard layout.
Key requirements included:
- A pool surround that is comfortable underfoot and safe for children
- A finish that works across varying heights, falls and door levels
- Seamless transitions between the alfresco steps, seating landing, garden beds and retaining walls
- A colour and finish that suits the homeowners’ design preferences, supplied to the concreter’s schedule
“The red brick was really hot underfoot, and it wasn’t safe for our two children. It just wasn’t that pleasant,” said Charlie Adams, homeowner.
Boral Solution
Boral supplied Atlantis Beach exposed aggregate from our Western Australia decorative concrete range. Decorative concrete uses coloured aggregates, oxides and coloured cement types such as white and cream cement to produce exposed aggregate finishes, with honed and polished finishes also available.
Boral supplied 27m³ of Atlantis Beach exposed aggregate, delivered in five loads to cover 250m² of pool surround, steps and landing. Deliveries were scheduled to suit the concreter’s program, and the colour was matched to the homeowners’ selection.
Atlantis Beach was selected for its popularity, colour range and suitability for outdoor entertaining areas. [CONFIRM ANY PERFORMANCE CLAIMS, e.g. slip resistance or heat reflectance, before including]
“On challenging jobs such as this one, many of our clients have certain expectations that we need to meet, and Boral’s products help us meet those standards," said Kyle Exley, Managing Director of D&L Concrete Services.
Project outcomes
The completed pool surround delivers a more comfortable and functional outdoor space that:
- Replaces the original red brick with a safer surface for the family
- Connects the alfresco steps, seating landing, pool and garden areas
- Provides a refined, durable decorative finish through the use of exposed aggregate
“The process was so easy, easier than I thought it was going to be. They had the colour that I wanted,” said Charlie.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates how Boral’s decorative concrete range can be used to transform a residential backyard, delivering both performance and design outcomes. By pairing Atlantis Beach exposed aggregate with careful detailing across multiple levels and falls, the project achieves a durable, family-friendly finish suited to its pool setting.
