Sustainability is no longer confined to corporate reporting and strategy documents. Across Australia's resources sector, it is increasingly influencing procurement decisions, project approvals and the way mining operators select suppliers.
That was one of the key themes discussed at this year's Queensland Mining & Engineering Exhibition (QME) in Mackay, where Boral Key Account Manager Jared Russell joined industry leaders for a panel discussion exploring sustainability, ESG and the future of the resources sector.
Recognised as Australia's largest regional mining event, QME brought together more than 9,000 registered attendees and 370 exhibitors from across the mining, engineering and resources sectors. The event provided a platform for industry leaders to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of mining, including sustainability, safety, productivity, workforce capability and operational performance.
Participating in the panel session, Sustainability in Practice: ESG, Regulation and the Resources Sector, Jared shared insights into how sustainability is moving beyond long-term objectives and becoming a practical business consideration for customers operating across the resources industry.
For mining and infrastructure operators, sustainability increasingly influences investment decisions, procurement requirements and supplier selection. Customers are seeking greater transparency around the materials they use, including recycled content, emissions and the environmental performance of products across the project lifecycle.
This shift creates new opportunities for suppliers to deliver solutions that balance performance, durability and sustainability.

For Boral, these conversations are increasingly relevant across the resources sector. Mining operations rely on high-performing materials for haul roads, hardstands, plant pads, workshops, water infrastructure and transport networks. As customers place greater emphasis on responsible sourcing, recycled content and lower carbon solutions, material suppliers have an important role to play in supporting project outcomes.
The exhibition also provided an opportunity for Boral's team to connect with customers and industry stakeholders from across the Bowen Basin and wider Queensland resources sector. With operations in Mackay and the surrounding region, Boral continues to support the construction, maintenance and infrastructure projects that underpin one of Australia's most significant mining regions.
As expectations continue to evolve, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: sustainability is no longer a future consideration. It is becoming a practical part of how projects are planned, procured and delivered today.
