Local open day offers rare insight into one of NSW’s key cement operations
Boral’s Berrima Cement Works recently welcomed the New Berrima community on site for a public open day, offering a behind-the-scenes look at one of New South Wales’ most significant cement operations.
With a long history of cement production in the region, the site is well known locally, but for many visitors, this was a rare opportunity to see operations up close and learn more about how cement is produced.
Families, neighbours and staff came together for the day, with a mix of site tours, equipment displays and activities designed to engage visitors of all ages.
Bringing the process to life
Guided tours were a highlight of the event, giving visitors the chance to explore the site and better understand the cement manufacturing process, from raw materials through to clinker production.
The strong interest in tours reflected a genuine curiosity from the local community to learn more about how the site operates and its role in supporting construction across the region.
Partnering with local services and industry
The open day was supported by a number of local organisations and industry partners, including the Berrima Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, Dark Knight Engineering and the Berrima District Old Machinery Club.
Their involvement added to the day’s activities and reinforced the strong connection between the site and the surrounding community.
Supporting supply and looking to the future
Berrima Cement Works plays a critical role in supplying building and infrastructure projects, providing a significant proportion of cement used across New South Wales and the ACT.
At the same time, the site continues to focus on improving how cement is produced. This includes the increasing use of alternative fuels in the manufacturing process, supporting efforts to reduce emissions while maintaining reliable supply.
Strengthening community connection
The open day provided an opportunity to build greater understanding of the site’s operations and highlight the people behind them.
By opening its gates, the Berrima team was able to share its work more directly with the community, strengthening relationships and showcasing the importance of the site to both the region and the broader construction industry.
