Boral and its specialist concrete placing division DMG are supporting the redevelopment of Harbourside at Darling Harbour, one of Sydney’s most significant urban renewal projects.

DMG, a sub-brand of Boral, has played a key role in delivering concrete construction across Sydney for decades, contributing to much of the city’s skyline. At Harbourside, this capability is being applied to a large-scale waterfront redevelopment transforming the former Harbourside Shopping Centre into a new mixed-use precinct.

Once complete, the development will deliver a tower of more than 40 storeys with luxury apartments, alongside retail, commercial space and over 10,000m² of public domain.

Project Challenge

The scale, height and location of the Harbourside redevelopment present a complex set of challenges for concrete supply and placement.

The project requires more than 52,000m³ of concrete, with large daily pours across multiple locations on site.

At the same time, construction is taking place in the heart of Darling Harbour, one of Sydney’s busiest precincts. Deliveries must be carefully coordinated through constrained access points, while pumping operations need to service both deep basement structures and a high-rise tower footprint.

“There can be upwards of three pumps on site with 500 to 600 cubic metres being delivered at multiple locations,” said Nicholas Cal, Construction Manager at DMG.

The structure itself adds further complexity, with hydrostatic elements below the water table alongside extensive above-ground construction.

“The logistics around pumping and placing those concretes is quite difficult,” he said.

Boral Solution

Boral and DMG are delivering an integrated approach that combines advanced concrete mixes with specialist placing capability tailored to each stage of the build.

For the basement, ENVISIA® concrete has been specified to perform in conditions below the water table, where durability and structural integrity are critical.

“There is a hydrostatic structure that sits below the water table and there are specified mixes that we’re delivering for those slabs,” said Nicholas Cal.

Above ground, Envirocrete® low carbon concrete is being used to support sustainability targets while maintaining the strength and workability required for placement across the tower and podium.

“Our clients demand sustainable mixes to be provided, helping their cause when it comes to Green Star rated buildings,” he says.

Mixes are designed to balance performance with pumpability, ensuring efficient delivery across both vertical and horizontal placements in a complex site environment.

Team Engagement

Delivering concrete at this scale in a high-traffic urban location requires tight coordination between teams.

DMG works closely with Boral’s technical specialists, Mirvac Constructions and project stakeholders to plan pours, manage delivery schedules and ensure consistent performance across different structural elements.

“It’s certainly something that we’re working closely with Boral technical to deliver,” said Nicholas Cal.

This collaboration ensures that mixes remain practical for placement while meeting the demanding specifications of the project.

Project Outcomes

The Harbourside redevelopment will deliver a new mixed-use waterfront precinct at Darling Harbour, combining residential, retail and public space.

For Boral and DMG, the project highlights the ability to deliver complex concrete works at scale in one of Australia’s most challenging urban environments. From high-volume pours to high-rise pumping and constrained logistics, the project showcases integrated capability across supply and placement.

“It’s good to be part of such a high-profile city project - something that’s going to be here for generations to come,” said Nicholas Cal

Conclusion

The Harbourside project showcases how Boral’s materials and DMG’s placing expertise work together to deliver complex urban developments.

By combining advanced concrete solutions with coordinated on-site execution, Boral continues to support the construction of Australia’s next generation of landmark projects.
