Lucas Gregg knows Teven Quarry well. As Quarry Supervisor, he plays a key role in day‑to‑day operations at the New South Wales site, where he has been part of the Boral team for six years.
A Lismore local, Lucas spent his final school years in Sydney before starting his working life behind the wheel of a truck. While he once considered following his father into a career as a mechanic, some well‑timed advice set him on a different path.
“I was ready to start training as a mechanic, but a relative said, ‘Don’t turn your hobby into a profession,’ so I decided to get my truck driving licence instead,” Lucas said.
That decision led to years of experience across a wide range of heavy vehicles, including around six years of interstate long‑haul driving. When Lucas and his wife welcomed their first child, he began looking for work closer to home, which is what brought him to Boral’s Teven Quarry.
“When I started, the quarry was in the middle of some major projects,” Lucas said. “There were about 18 employees and contractors on site. I began driving a dump truck, which only lasted a week or two, then moved into a digger role piling overburden. Once that project finished, I went onto load and haul operations.”
At Teven, Lucas quickly demonstrated his capability and willingness to learn. Over time, the site leadership team entrusted him with additional responsibilities, supporting his progression into the Quarry Supervisor role when it became available.
“Most of the staff here get to do a bit of everything,” said Quarry Manager Dick Pallisier. “It means they build strong experience and can work more efficiently as a team.”
Lucas has continued to develop his skills throughout his career with Boral. He has completed a shot firing course, achieved a Certificate IV in Surface Extraction Operations, and is currently undertaking a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. He has also visited other Boral operations, including Peppertree Quarry and the Marulan Limestone mine, to broaden his understanding of how different sites operate.
When asked what he enjoys most about working at Teven Quarry, Lucas points to the variety each day brings, the site’s strong environmental focus, the emphasis on safety, and the friendships he has formed along the way.
“There have been a lot of changes over the years,” he said. “Boral has always taken safety seriously, but now there’s even more focus and awareness. That’s a really positive thing.”
Outside of work, Lucas enjoys spending time with his family and pursuing his passion for photography. Living near Ballina also means he is never far from the water.
“I’ll often head out early for a fish before work,” Lucas said. “It gives me some quiet time to focus on the day ahead.”
