From concrete testing in Melbourne to leading a quarry team on the Gold Coast, Rachael Jackson’s career at Boral reflects growth, opportunity and the confidence to embrace change.
Rachael’s career change started during a turning point. “I was managing swim schools and outdoor pools, but when they closed during the COVID lockdowns in Melbourne, I decided to change careers,” she recalls. “That’s when I joined Boral in concrete testing and eventually transitioned into quarry operations.”
After gaining experience at Deer Park in Victoria, Rachael embraced the chance to progress her career and enjoy the Gold Coast lifestyle, joining the team at West Burleigh Quarry. Since then, she has driven dump trucks, water carts, and loaders, operated mobile screens and fixed plant, and now leads a team that thrives on collaboration. “Stepping up has been challenging but rewarding,” she says. “It’s allowed me to tie in my past operations management experience with quarry work.”
Outside of work, Rachael’s life is just as full. Weekends mean AFL football time with loved ones and creating music as a singer-songwriter. Her Bachelor’s degree in Sport and Recreation Management reflects her love for the outdoors, a passion that fits perfectly with life on the Gold Coast. “Living here means I get to enjoy an amazing lifestyle,” she says.
The quarry itself has changed too. “It’s grown and developed significantly, making it a busy place with something new every week,” Rachael explains. But some things remain constant: the stunning backdrop of flora and fauna and the strong team culture that keeps her motivated. “We’ve built friendships that extend beyond work hours,” she adds. “There are definitely plenty of characters at West Burleigh.”
Her best advice? “Back yourself,” she says without hesitation. And when it comes to life, Rachael keeps it simple: “I’m definitely no Gandhi, but I’m learning not to take myself too seriously.”
