Supplying concrete to a major mining operation in remote Cape York requires more than standard logistics. It demands technical expertise, careful planning and close collaboration across teams.
Boral’s Mobile 73 concrete plant has recently been mobilised to support Rio Tinto’s Amrun bauxite mine expansion in far north Queensland, delivering concrete for critical haul road infrastructure in one of Australia’s most challenging operating environments.
Located south of the Hay River from Weipa and around 100 kilometres north of Aurukun, the Amrun site is accessible only via long road journeys and barge transport. Aggregates are sourced locally, cement is transported more than 1,200 kilometres by road before the final leg by barge, and specialist mobile plant equipment is deployed to operate entirely within mine specifications.
The Mobile 73 plant will produce approximately 4,000 cubic metres of concrete during the first stage of construction, supporting new culverts for a haul road designed to service Rio Tinto’s heavy truck fleet. The road forms part of a broader expansion that underpins one of the world’s largest bauxite operations, supplying around 20 per cent of global demand.
Mobilising the plant required close coordination across Boral’s Queensland and national teams, with equipment, logistics and technical support brought together within a compressed timeframe. The set‑up was completed over approximately three weeks, with specialist teams working on site to meet strict safety, electrical and operational requirements unique to the mining environment.
Despite the remoteness and complexity of the site, the plant is producing concrete using locally sourced bauxite material, demonstrating Boral’s ability to adapt materials and processes to meet site‑specific conditions while maintaining quality and performance standards.
The project highlights Boral’s capability to deliver mobile concrete solutions in highly constrained environments, combining local knowledge with national expertise to support major resource and infrastructure projects.
With production continuing until the onset of the wet season, the Amrun project stands as a strong example of how teamwork, technical excellence and logistics capability enable Boral to operate reliably in some of Australia’s most remote locations.
