Billy Button Place is a stunning example of how thoughtful design and quality materials can transform a steep, unusable backyard into a functional and inviting outdoor space. Yergan Landscape, a South Australian firm specialising in design, construction, and ongoing garden maintenance, embraced the natural slope to create a garden that feels calm and connected.
Project Challenge
The site’s uneven gradient and restricted access posed significant challenges. Rather than extensive earthworks, the design needed to work with the terrain, introducing structure and usability while maintaining a natural flow.
Boral Solution
Boral’s standard grey concrete was selected for its proven consistency and reliability. The concrete was formed and poured in situ to create burnished steps and a bench seat, delivering a sleek, durable finish that complements the garden’s soft landscaping.
“We prefer to use Boral concrete for in situ structures for consistency of quality. Boral delivers consistent concrete every time,” said Jason Schulz, Director of Yergan Landscapes.
The burnished finish was achieved by mechanically trowelling the surface during the final stages of curing, which compacts and smooths the concrete to produce a dense, polished look without additional coatings. This technique delivers a sleek, durable finish that complements the garden’s soft landscaping.
Project Outcomes
The transformation of Billy Button Place demonstrates how a challenging site can become a beautiful, functional space. Two terraces now provide structure and movement through the garden, while burnished concrete steps and seating create practical resting points. The hardscape elements are softened by plantings such as Billy Buttons, Verbena, and Teucrium, which add colour and texture throughout the year. The result is a garden that feels inviting and calm, blending durability with natural beauty.
