Boral’s West Burleigh Quarry recently hosted a site visit with industry stakeholders to discuss the on‑the‑ground realities of operating a high‑performing quarry at full capacity. Conversations on the day centred on workforce pressures, capability needs and the day‑to‑day responsibilities of maintaining safe, efficient production for the Gold Coast region. These insights are feeding directly into BuildSkills Australia’s Civil Construction Review, which is gathering genuine feedback from employers and sites to ensure future training products reflect modern work practices and technology.

BuildSkills Australia is currently reviewing 29 units of competency across key civil construction qualifications within the national Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package. The project includes joint work with the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance to align shared units, ensuring training stays current and relevant for both mining and civil construction workforces. By contributing site‑based perspectives from West Burleigh, Boral helps ground recommendations in practical experience, improving workforce readiness and safety outcomes across the sector.

West Burleigh Quarry supplies high‑quality hard rock aggregates for residential, commercial and infrastructure projects across the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales. The site operates weekdays and supports dependable local supply, backed by Boral’s safety and environmental management systems.

Boral has outlined proposals designed to secure long‑term, local materials supply and support the City of Gold Coast’s waste management capacity. This includes unlocking the State Key Resource Area at Reedy Creek to replace West Burleigh’s hard rock supply and transitioning West Burleigh to resource recovery activities that would rehabilitate the existing quarry void. The proposals aim to reduce heavy vehicle movements, keep construction costs competitive and protect significant portions of the Reedy Creek site.

Industry stakeholders can review the draft training products and provide feedback to BuildSkills Australia through its Civil Construction Review project page. Your input helps ensure training and qualifications match real site conditions and future capability needs.
