The Heirisson Island pathways form part of the broader Boorloo Bridge (Causeway Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridges) project, a major infrastructure upgrade improving connections between Victoria Park, Heirisson Island and the Perth CBD.

Delivered within a culturally and environmentally significant river setting, the project includes new shared pathways and landscaped public areas across Heirisson Island, incorporating seating, rest points and enhanced accessibility.

Project Challenge

The project required a pathway solution that could balance durability, functionality and visual design within a high-profile public space.

Key requirements included:

  • Durable concrete suitable for high pedestrian and cyclist traffic
  • A finish that integrates with the surrounding landscape and public realm design
  • A visually distinctive outcome that responds to the project’s natural and cultural context across extended pathway runs

Boral Solution

Boral supplied Colori® Turmeric coloured concrete, delivering a warm, natural-toned finish that aligns with the landscape design intent.

To achieve a lighter, more refined result on this project, the mix was tailored using Cockburn Crème aggregates to introduce a lighter base tone, while a reduced colour dosage softened the intensity of the Turmeric pigment.

This approach demonstrates the flexibility of the Colori® range, allowing a standard national colour to be adapted to suit local design requirements.

The pathways were further enhanced through a combination of textured and patterned finishing techniques, including a rock slat-style finish applied to introduce a subtle linear texture across the surface, improving slip resistance while reinforcing a natural, landscape-driven aesthetic.

Stencilled sandblasted elements, including footprint motifs, were incorporated by applying stencils to the cured concrete and abrasive blasting the surface to create contrast through texture and tone variation.

Together, the mix design and finishing techniques deliver a cohesive surface outcome that balances durability with visual interest.

Project Outcomes

The completed pathways contribute to a high-quality public realm that:

  • Supports safe and accessible movement for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Integrates seamlessly with surrounding landscaping and infrastructure
  • Provides a visually engaging surface through the use of colour, texture and embedded pattern

As part of the Boorloo Bridge project, the works enhance connectivity across a key Perth corridor used by thousands of people each day.

Conclusion

The Heirisson Island pathways demonstrate how Boral’s Colori® range can be leveraged to deliver both performance and design outcomes in public infrastructure.

By using Turmeric as the base colour, refined through Cockburn Crème aggregates and reduced dosage, and pairing this with rock slat texturing and stencilled sandblasting, the project achieves a durable, landscape-responsive finish suited to its prominent riverfront setting.
