From an unplanned path to quarry operations

For Wendy Purvis, a career in quarrying wasn’t part of the original plan.

Now working as a loader driver and plant operator at Boral’s Wellcamp Quarry, Wendy has embraced a completely new direction, building skills and confidence in an industry she hadn’t previously considered.

What began as an unexpected opportunity has become a hands-on role at a busy regional quarry, where she continues to develop her capability across site operations.

Learning a new industry

Before joining Boral, Wendy worked as a phlebotomist. With more than 30 years of holding a truck licence, she was keen to return to driving and take on a new challenge.

“I was keen to return to driving,” she says. “The opportunity to combine my licence, my interest in heavy machinery and the chance for a fresh challenge made Boral the right fit.”

Since joining the business 18 months ago, Wendy has progressed through a range of operational roles. She began as a weighbridge operator before moving into the dump truck and water truck, and now operates the sales loader.

“Each role has allowed me to learn something new and better understand how different parts of the quarry work together,” she says.

Along the way, she has continued to build her skills, completing her S123 Supervisory course and learning to operate additional plant, including the air classifier.

“I value the continuous upskilling and the hands-on experience I’ve gained along the way.”

Supported by a strong team

Transitioning into a new industry later in life has meant learning quickly and leaning on the experience of others.

At Wellcamp, Wendy says the support of the team has made a significant difference.

“The people and culture make the biggest difference,” she says. “Everyone works together and looks out for one another.”

She has built strong relationships on site and describes the team as supportive and enjoyable to work with, contributing to a positive and collaborative environment.

Creating new pathways

Wendy’s journey highlights that there isn’t a single pathway into quarrying. Her move into an operational role reflects the opportunities available for people from different backgrounds to transition into the industry and build new skills.

It also reflects the growing number of women working across quarry sites, contributing to operations and strengthening site teams.

Reflecting on her experience, Wendy encourages others to remain open to change.

“Explore every opportunity and stay open to change,” she says. “Remaining adaptable creates the best pathways both professionally and personally.”

She also draws on advice that has guided her throughout her time at Boral.

“Follow procedures, keep an open mind, listen, be open to new opportunities and always work as a team.”

Looking ahead

What started as an unplanned change has become a new career path.

At Wellcamp Quarry, Wendy continues to develop her skills while contributing to a strong team environment, demonstrating how experience, adaptability and a willingness to learn can support a successful transition into a new role.
