Boral has supported customer BMD with a critical pavement materials trial as part of planning for the Melbourne Airport runway project, bringing together expertise from multiple teams under tight timeframes.

With limited notice, Boral mobilised teams across Coldstream, Technical, Major Projects and Sales to produce four specialised pavement material blends to support the trial. Each blend played a role in assessing performance requirements and helping BMD refine its tender approach.

The trial required close coordination, detailed planning and adherence to precise specifications. To manage moisture requirements, a mobile pugmill was deployed on site, allowing blending to take place at Boral’s Coldstream facility. BMD also arranged for a paving crew to travel from Sydney to complete the trial works.

Representatives from BMD, Melbourne Airport and BECA were present during the trial to observe the process and outcomes. Feedback on the results was positive, reflecting the effectiveness of the collaborative approach and the ability of all parties to work together under challenging conditions.

The trial demonstrated Boral’s capability to respond quickly, deliver specialised materials, and support customers through complex planning and evaluation phases. By combining technical expertise with practical delivery, the teams involved helped enable informed decision‑making for a significant aviation infrastructure project.
