Boral Berrima Cement Works and (Medway) Colliery
Introduction
Boral Cement's Berrima operations, in the NSW Southern Highlands, play an important role in the supply of cement to the building and construction industry.
The operations consist of a Cement Works, located adjacent to the village of New Berrima, and a coal mine and colliery, located in the village of Medway.
Mining activities trace back to the 1880s, while the Cement Works were established in the 1920s. Over time, the operations have made a significant contribution to the social and economic development of the Southern Highlands.

Part 3A (Colliery) and Section 75W (stockpiling) applications
During 2011-12, Boral has had two applications under assessment with the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure concerning separate parts of the local operations.
The applications seek to continue the operation of the Colliery under planning legislation (Part 3A), as well as proposing stockpiling at the Cement Works as a means of better managing external sales transport (Section 75W).
