Built on Wharf 8 and 9 of Sydney Harbour in Pyrmont, the Sydney Wharf apartment complex, constructed by Brookfield Multiplex, features an interior design that is rich in detail.
The original brief was the design of luxurious apartments which provided space, functional modern architecture and integration with the environment. Project Director Kirsten Stanisich of SJB Interiors explains that the design had to be transferable across 100 apartments, which was a significant consideration when specifying the floor.
Wide boards (180mm) in a parquetry ‘square on square’ design were specified for aesthetic, environmental and functional reasons.
“The inspiration for the design was derived from the grand, spacious apartments of Paris and Rome in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which featured beautifully detailed timber floors,” explains Kirsten, “The parquetry configuration is a contemporary interpretation of a classic style.” ‘Square on square’ parquetry is one of the oldest parquetry designs, however it translates well to a modern context on a large scale.
Environmental factors also came into play with the use of shorter lengths of timber resulting in less wastage than with a traditional strip floor. The design provided more room for expansion and contraction of the boards, a necessity in spaces receiving so much natural light, the harbourside location and the wide board width. Blackbutt and Spotted Gum were specified for their warmth and contemporary feel. Both species are in good supply and sourced from local sustainably managed forestry. The shorter lengths also allowed for easier transport to the site. The floor was installed by DMC Flooring and covered a total of 9000 square metres. In each apartment, Boral RV-4 acoustic underlay was laid over a concrete slab, followed by two sheets of plywood, which were stapled to each other and floated over the underlay.
Boards in 1.26 metre lengths were then glued and top nailed, then finished with Bostik Ultracoat modified oil matt finish. “It was a surprisingly straightforward job,” says installer Darek Pazdzieski from DMC Flooring, “but one with great results.”
