The new wetcast plant is located on the Masonry Wacol
site - the heart of Boral Masonry product manufacturing in
Queensland, with the Hess and Cassani plants nearby.
The plant was constructed at a cost of approx. $12 million
and commenced operations in early 2006. It is the first
Masonry manufacturing facility Boral has commissioned
from the ground up and built as a result of the growing
market interest in large format paving products for which
the existing Stoneworks plant at Prospect, NSW was not
able to keep up with demand.
Wetcast products are manufactured as the name
suggests – wet concrete in a fluid consistency similar to
ready mix or batched concrete is cast from moulds and
cured naturally in ambient conditions to produce the
textured face, profile and undercuts so valued in Boral
Masonry paving products.
The new plant at Wacol utilises world-leading automation
technology in the form of KUKA robotics to manufacture
wetcast products for national distribution. The automated
casting is more efficient and safer than manual methods.
In addition, the plant produces superior quality masonry
products with consistent colour, texture and finishes for
larger format masonry products such as Bradstone,
Stoneworks, Aspenstone and the new Abode.
Important environmental benefits of the new wetcast
masonry plant include zero water discharge with 100%
of waste-water recycled and reused in manufacturing
operations. All onsite building lighting is PLC (Programmable
Logic Controller) driven – daylight sensors determine
lighting operation, reducing power consumption.
