Sydney In Bloom Brand Story

Students enrolled in NSW TAFE architectural landscape & design courses were encouraged to participate in the design process, creating an outdoor garden display with the winning design featured at the ‘Sydney in Bloom Garden Show’. “I was encouraged by my design teacher at Ryde TAFE to prepare a design for the student competition for Sydney in Bloom 2005.  I had only just started the course (Diploma in Horticulture (Landscape Design)) and so was thrilled when I found out I had won a prize - particularly as this was my first design project.” said Sally Arnold, one of the award winning design students.

Exposed to the breadth of the Boral brand, the young designers who created the 2005 Award winning display utilised the comprehensive Boral range of Masonry and Timber products in a modern and stylised manner, demonstrating that Boral products could be ‘form’ based as well as ‘functional’. “Entering the competition benefited me enormously” said Sally. “It was an invaluable experience because it provided me with the opportunity to create a design for a "real" situation (where the winner's garden would be built), to discover and explore the ways of using different products and also to create a garden with real constraints - notably the small size of the garden and the prohibition on digging on the site. In the end, I also learnt a great deal about the difference between designing a garden and a show garden. I came away with an in-depth knowledge of various products and the possible ways of using them. I am very grateful for Boral committing resources to the competition.”

Boral worked closely with the NSW TAFE community and collaborated with existing clients on the award winning display, garnering support from industry leaders such as Bose, Beefeater and Beacon Lighting. This provided an important introduction to the industry network and an opportunity for the next generation of specifiers and designers to develop valuable working relationships in an intensely competitive industry. The 2005 award winning performance demonstrated Boral’s leadership position in the market and the combination of materials available through Boral companies.
